We've been using WMware for a number of years now - even for very small business clients.

It's been so simple to run a couple VM's on a server and get some real benefits..

We just started using Synology products in the mix about 1 year ago.  We're probably using a common configuration:

  • Synology with Raid 10
  • ISCSI targets for each VM
  • Multiple VMware servers connected to multiple iSCSI targets

Now instead of taking snapshots of the storage system, or copying/archiving the VM's - we're also using a Backup Exec VM with a backup-to-disk location that is connected to a 200GB iSCSI target directly on the Synology.

  • VM stored on the Synology
  • VM has D:\ native iSCSI Volume on same synology
  • Symantec Backup Exec running backup-to-disk only

Here are a couple screenshots showing that it actually runs pretty quick.  This backup was about a 1GB sharepoint farm, and then a verify.

We'll post a follow-up to this after the other larger backups run a bit, like Exchange - 100GB multiple information stores, which are also stored on same Synology.

Fun.
